2/28/23, 10:00 PM

The maritime climate in Hamburg places special demands on the care of our four-legged friends. Here you will find important tips for every season to ensure your pet stays healthy and happy all year round.

springtime (March to May)
  • Tick season begins: Regular checks after walks

  • Renew prevention against parasites

  • Brush the coat thoroughly after the winter

  • Be careful with spring flowers: some can be poisonous

  • Slowly build up your first longer walks

summer pleasures (June to August)
  • Provide sufficient drinking water

  • Offer shady places to rest

  • Do not leave in parked cars

  • Schedule long walks during cooler times of the day

  • In hot weather: reduce activities

  • Use Hamburg's dog bathing areas (e.g. on the Alster)

Autumnal features (September to November)

  • Reflective equipment for darker days

  • Rain protection in typical Hamburg weather

  • Check for fungi in the fur after walks in the forest

  • Leaves can hide parasites – check regularly

  • Check fur for wetness and dry thoroughly

winter time (December to February)
  • Intensify paw care due to road salt

  • Short-haired dogs may need to be protected with a coat

  • In snow and ice: Grease paw pads

  • Don't neglect exercise despite the cold

  • Warm, draft-free sleeping place

  • Energy requirements may increase – adjust feed ration

Year-round tips for Hamburg pet owners:

  • Have weather-appropriate equipment ready

    • raincoat for dogs

    • Non-slip underlays for wet days

    • paw towels for on the go

  • Preparing indoor activities

    • intelligence toys for rainy days

    • employment opportunities in the apartment

    • Schedule playtime together

  • health care

    • Schedule regular vet visits

    • Keep vaccinations up to date

    • coat and dental care all year round

  • Special tips for indoor cats:

    • Keep an eye on humidity

    • Set up safe viewing spots at the window

    • If the windows are open: install cat guards

    • Fresh air through safe ventilation

  • For outdoor cats:

    • Offer a dry retreat

    • Check the cat flap regularly for leaks

    • In winter: provide warm shelter outdoors
